Once upon a time, six friends decided to go on a journey. Wanting to test their mettle, they planned to take down four mighty boxes of Yellow Cab pizza, that were accompanied by twenty-four menacing bottles of San Mig Light.
Along the way, they encountered a couple who joined them in their quest. Together, these brave, young (okay, so maybe there’s an exception or two), and vigilant souls triumphed as they wolfed down pizza, after pizza, after pizza, risking life and limb (and atherosclerotic plaques) to finish what they have started. Each warrior survived the perilous battle unscathed.
As the couple bid their farewell, the remaining soldiers decided to go on another quest, this time to rescue a girl in distress. This maiden caught the eye of one of the warriors in their earlier journeys, and he wanted to see her again. However, only five decided to continue, as the sixth warrior wanted to go back to his homeland. He had missed his family, so much so that without hesitation, he rode his steed (a truly reliable mountain bike) and went on his way.
The band that remained pushed on, fearless and undaunted. They finally came to a place called Paseo de Santa Rosa, where all sorts of folks convened. Here the lad who was part of the group, desperately looked for the girl, but she was nowhere in sight. He soon found out from the barkeep that the lady he was looking for was bound for the Land of the Rising Sun. This troubled the young man. He wanted to see her before she departed. So he summoned an old friend, the dark, wise wizard of Florida to find the girl. After only minutes of searching, in an ancient alley they found her, and with gladness in her eyes she went back with them to Paseo. Here the lad learned that the girl was already betrothed to another man. For a moment, he felt the ground swallow him up. He could not believe his misfortune. "Dumb as a mule, I am", he thought to himself. Gallantly, he accepted this revelation and, being a true gentleman, he wished her happiness in life.
As the night went on, the five warriors celebrated their victory, reminiscing good times and bringing cheer unto each other. At long last, it was time to say goodbye. One by one, the warriors went back to their own kingdoms, and the lad who hitched a ride with the wizard decided to go on, on his own. Yes, he and his brothers were triumphant this day, but he couldn’t understand why the emptiness in his heart lingered on. He knew, as he trodded along the long, dark road from Checkpoint to his humble home in Canlubang (6.5 km), everything he has experienced is just the beginning. His story is yet to unfold.
